Religion tends to be a bit tricky when it comes to raising kids. Many couple friends of mine have been blindsided during pregnancy with the all of a sudden realization that they don’t agree on which religion to raise their children in. With Jim and I it was fairly simple.

I was raised Mormon. I have not been to a service since I was 18 and my mother couldn’t make me go anymore. I don’t have any animosity towards the Church, nor do I have any long lost love. I enjoyed going when I was a kid, it’s youth programs are amazing and we had so much fun. However, I have no interest in my children being raised in the Mormon church.

Jim is Catholic. He and his brothers and sister all went through the Catholic schools here in our town. His family is active in the parish. They say grace before each meal and attend Mass each Sunday.

 At this point I consider myself a Christian. I don’t regularly attend church, and to be honest I don’t want to. I pray. I feel like I can be closer to God in a field with my thoughts, then I can kneeling on a pew with the thoughts of a Priest in my ear. I feel if you are a good person and you are good to others, you will end up in a good place.

However, the boys will most likely be attending Catholic school. Since that is the probability, we made the decision to baptize them Catholic. It meant so much more to Jim and his family to have them baptized, then it did for me to not. Chase was baptized December 2nd, 2007 and Jimmy entered the Church this past Sunday, August 9th,2009.

I feel as though the right choice was made for them, but they will have the end choice on what sort of a role religion and church will play in their lives. Had Mormonism been not so heavily pushed on me, I might not have run as fast as I could in the other direction. Religion is a personal thing and I think it should be a personal choice, whether you are 8, 15 or 30 years old.
