Being A Parent Is Scary
Two weeks ago yesterday I took Chase to the doctor for a red swollen area behind his left ear. It looked a little hivey, but since nothing new had been introduced to him I figured we would go have it looked at. Chase’s pediatrician told us it was probably a reaction to a bug bite, and maybe it was a bit infected. We left the office with a ten day script for some antibiotics.
A couple days later the redness had spread some, so back into the doctor we went. We saw another doctor in the group, and he said it wasn’t anything he was very concerned about but to continue the antibiotics and add some Zyrtec to the mix to see if that helped. We gave him the Zyrec that afternoon and immediately saw a huge difference. We figured he got bit by a spider and had had a little allergic reaction, and maybe a bit of an infection. There was a big sigh of relief when the redness went down.
Chase finished his antibiotics last Saturday and this Wednesday I noticed a red splotch on his left cheek. Over the course of Wednesday and Thursday it across his cheek and the center took on a pale look to it while all around it was red.
Back into the doctor we went.
Diagnosis?
Lyme’s Disease.
We are fortunate that Chase presented with the bulls-eye rash. The theory is that the original redness was the tick bite being a bit infected, and now he is presenting the bulls-eye. The course of treatment is three weeks of oral antibiotics. He should be fine, it is highly unusual for there to be any issues after it has been caught so early.
I hate this part of being a parent. I hate the feeling in your stomach when you JUST KNOW something is not right. I hate watching the doctor examine my child. I hate having to give him medicine. I hate the idea that something could take him away from me.
Chase was lucky, but a lot of kids go undiagnosed until they become symptomatic. Check your kiddies before bed for ticks if you live in an area that Lyme’s is prevalent in. We live in an area where Lyme’s is hugely active and we are vigilant about checking the boys. However not all ticks latch, some just bite and fall off so watch any bites carefully.
In the mean time? I would like to wrap the boys head to toe in plastic wrap and ensure nothing gets in. Think I can do that? No? Damn.
Oops
A couple mornings ago Jim and I were getting ready to start the day. We could hear the boys stirring in their room, followed quickly by the sounds of Chase turning on their TV to watch “Dog Woobie” (Lady and the Tramp). The boys have a gate up on their bedroom door, so I usually have a few minutes once they are up. I went into the bathroom to brush my teeth and came out to Chase standing in our bedroom.
“Chase! You know you aren’t supposed to climb the gate! That’s bad.”
“Yeah Mommy, what the hell?”
Oy Vey.
Birthdays and Balls
It’s been a crazy week, filled with birthday wonderfulness. Jimmy turning one was bittersweet, like I think most first birthdays are. My little baby is getting big so fast, and time goes faster and faster each day. However I adore the little person he is evolving into and I am so proud that he is mine.
We began his birthday on the 27th with a trip to Toys R Us. It is something we did on Chase’s first birthday so we decided it was what we would do for Jimmy as well. Since the whole surprise context doesn’t really come in to play at one, we had a good time walking around and letting the boys mess with stuff. Jimmy was out of his mind happy.
We ended up leaving the store with a variation of the same gift we gave Chase for his first birthday. We also left with a VERY ANGRY toddler in tow, as he was ticked off he couldn’t bring everything home with us. We got home and set up Jimmy’s present. It was love at first sight.
Then he danced on Daddy for a bit…
We had dinner and a bath and then…wait for it….
BACK INTO THE BALL PIT! The smile on his face just kills me. He is the happiest little person ever in this thing and it makes the 100 play balls that are now covering my living room at all times completely worth it. Sort of. Well, now that I have made it a game for Chase to put them away. Maybe.
Last night we had dinner and cake with the family, it was a great night and Jimmy had a great time rounding out his birthday the right way.
OH YEAH.
Brothers
My boys are 18 months apart, almost to the day. It has been a wild ride, one that I wouldn’t change for the world.
Watching the progression of their relationship has truly been an amazing experience.
I think the faces they are making at each other in the last picture really says it all.
Happy Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is for sure one of my favorite holidays. Not only is it the starting line to my favoriteholiday(Christmas!!) ,but it is a carb filled extravaganza that this fatty patty looks forward to all year.
In the years past I mostly concentrated on the food side of Thanksgiving. Well, that and football. This year though, with Chase being a bit older and more able to understand being thankful, I have been trying to explain to him the purpose of the day. He didn’t fully get the point, but he has been walking around telling all of his toys thank you and kissing them. So freaking cute.
This year has brought so many things that I am thankful for. It started out on January 27th with the birth of my baby Jimmy. While I am NOT thankful for 3 months of colic, this little man has brought us so much joy.
I am thankful for every minute that I get to spend with Chase. He is growing up so quickly, and becomes more able to take care of himself every day, even at two years old. He is dressing himself, and holding conversations that awe me every day.
I am thankful for my husband. I am thankful that due to his hard work I got to be home with Chase for over two years and with Jimmy until 6 months. I do not take that time for granted. I am thankful for all that he does for us.
I am thankful to be working, and to have a job when so many people don’t. I will try to remember that when I am complaining.
I am thankful to be moving within 2 miles of a Starbucks on Monday.
I am thankful for the Internet. I have connected with so many amazing people in the last couple years, and am surprised every day at the level of our connections. I have been supported and lifted up so many times, and I am beyond grateful.
I am thankful for my health. While I have some small issues going on, overall I am well.
I am thankful to NOT be pregnant on Thanksgiving. It can really cramp a girls eating style.
Most of all I am just thankful to be able to wake up every day to people I love. I am able to open my laptop and talk to people that make me laugh. I go to work in a job I enjoy and find rewarding. I get to snuggle with my boys and nuzzle into their soft baby necks. I am able to feel my husband wrap his arms around me for a hug.
I am thankful for all of this and more.
I’m old News.
A phone conversation with Chase:
Me: Hey buddy, it’s Mama. Hi Chase!
Chase: Hi Chase!
Me: No, say Hi Mama.
Chase: Hi Mama!
Me: Are you having fun at Jenny’s? Are you playing with Kylie? What did you have for dinner?
Chase: Oh mama, Jenny. Kylie fun. Oh mama, CHICKEN. CHICKEN mama.
Me: You had chicken? That’s nice. How’s Jimmy. Is brother being good?
Chase: Jimmy no chicken. Chase chicken. Chicken fun, Mama. Chicken for Chase.
Me: Daddy will be there to get you soon, Bud. Night Night Chase, love you.
Chase: No Daddy. Stay Jenny and Chicken. Night Mama, lub wu. Lub chicken too Mama.
Sigh. I’ve been so easily replaced.
